Here's a thought: what if the ideology working against the religious and political establishment, changing the 19th and 20th centuries in massive ways, were not Marxism but Weishauptism? After all, if you take "dethrone god and destroy capitalism" and replace capitalism with "the state" you pretty much get the creed of Adam Weishaupt, the Illuminatus.
And just as those following Marx's teachings advocated the use of a political party to overthrow the capitalist state (replacing one oppressive state with another), didn't Weishaupt want to destroy nation-states using powerful cliques, secret societies of benevolent (from his perspective) and enlightened men? That strikes me as very similar to Trotsky's concept of a Vanguard Party.
